OtaniemiThere is three way to find apartment for your stay. You can apply for students’ apartments in Hoas which is an organization that provides homes for students. They provide different types of accommodation like studio apartments or shared rooms in different location, for example Otaniemi or Kamppi. Another way to get apartment is Student Union of Aalto University AYY. They have apartments mainly in Otaniemi but beside it they have some in others parts of Helsinki and Espoo. You should check their web side to find more information (http://ayy.fi/en/housing/). While applying for apartment, you should keep in mind and check is an apartment furnished or not. Before you arrive make sure that an office will be open and you will be able to pick up your keys.

Students’ houses are definitely the cheapest option, but you can search for apartment from private market. For example, the web side http://www.vuokraovi.com/ can help you to find offers. Another way to find some private apartment to be rented is to search web sites through Google.

In addition to apartment you will need a lot of different stuff for your stay. The good way to get furniture and other things is a flea market ( http://www.kierratyskeskus.fi/in_english) . There is also an IKEA in Espoo around 15 km from Otaniemi.

Free-time activities

UnisportYou won’t be bored in Otaniemi if you don’t want to be. There are a lot of activities going on. If you enjoy sports you should visit UniSport and Otahalli where you can play different games, go to gym or fitness (https://unisport.fi/). Another way to get to know free-time opportunities is take part in Otasuunnistus on orientation week or in Talvipäivä in winter. During this events most part of different clubs have an own stand where they explain their functions by organizing some funny task to do. Joining clubs is a great way to get to know people and take part in different activities and events.

You should keep your eyes and ears open that you won’t miss any big event. You will get Otaniemi news on your e-mail every now and then with information about big events and activities organized by guild. Otherwise, you can keep on mind that there is an event calendar on AYY web site which is worth visiting.

Food?

There are many different canteens around the Otaniemi campus. With a student card or AYY:s membership payment receipt the lunch costs 2,60€. Affordable lunch for students is also offered in UniCaf’e canteens, which are situated in the Helsinki center.

Public transportation

To use the public transportation it is recommended to acquire a travel card. With the individual travel card students get 50% discount from tickets. You can download time or money to the card.

You can get the travel card from HSL’s Service points. A list of the Service points is found here. To get an individual travel card you will need the Student card or AYY’s payment receipt.

Health

Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS or YTHS) is responsible for students health. YTHS’s Otaniemi unit is situated at Otakaari 12. A student is entitled to use YTHS services when AYY:s membership fee has been payed. YTHS health services are free, with the exception of special health services and oral health services.
